Test Description & Overview
Electrolyte Panel: A critical biochemical serum panel measuring Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl-), and Bicarbonate/CO2 (HCO3-) to evaluate fluid osmolality, neuromuscular excitability, acid-base homeostasis, and renal tubular transport.
Sodium: 135 - 145 mEq/L; Potassium: 3.5 - 5.0 mEq/L; Chloride: 96 - 106 mEq/L; Bicarbonate (CO2): 22 - 29 mEq/L; Serum Anion Gap: 8 - 12 mEq/L.
Elevated (High) Values
- Hyperkalemia (K+ >5.5 mEq/L): Cardiac dysrhythmia risk (Peaked T waves)
- Hypernatremia (Na+ >145 mEq/L): Dehydration, Diabetes Insipidus, Osmotic Diuresis
- High Anion Gap Metabolic Acidosis (DKA, Lactic Acidosis, Uremia, Toxic Ingestions)
Decreased (Low) Values
- Severe Hyponatremia (Na+ <120 mEq/L): Cerebral edema, seizures, lethargy
- Hypokalemia (K+ <3.0 mEq/L): Muscle paralysis, ileus, cardiac ventricular arrhythmias
- Metabolic Alkalosis (Low Chloride / High Bicarbonate from Severe Vomiting)
Clinical Alignment & Significance
Electrolyte disruptions require immediate risk stratification; severe hyperkalemia (>6.5 mEq/L) demands urgent ECG, IV calcium gluconate, and insulin-glucose administration to prevent lethal cardiac arrest.
Diagnostic Guidance Notice
Standard laboratory reference ranges vary based on the testing facility. Significant deviations require immediate clinician review to rule out severe medical pathology.
